Airman

Airman by Eoin Colfer
In the late nineteenth century, when Conor Broekhart discovers a conspiracy to overthrow the king, he is branded a traitor, imprisoned, and forced to mine for diamonds under brutal conditions while he plans a daring escape from Little Saltee prison by way of a flying machine that he must design, build, and, hardest of all, trust to carry him to safety.

I would give Airman 4 stars on the scale. It was a well written book that was enjoyable to read. The characters were deep and well built. The setting was very fun and the ideas were good. Good job Eion Colfer! -ActingAmish

I had to force myself to finish this one. Although it was well written, the characters were not very likeable and the story was too dark and violent. I'll give it 2 1/2 stars. I liked the book "Airborn", by Kenneth Oppel, much better.

...The themes are as sweeping as the Airman's wings in full flight: justice, revenge, romance, good triumphing over evil, realizing one's dreams, blackmail, regicide, conspiracy, corruption, betrayal. While the dark and gruesome subject matter is not for the faint of heart, the moral underpinnings of the story are solid...Five Stars *****

...Airman is chock-full of gorgeous writing. It flows, man, like a kid with wings, sailing above the clouds. Read it. Devour it. Fly with it. Airman soars.
