At a time when most Americans ignored the atrocities going on in Europe in 1940,
American journalist Varian Fry put himself in great danger to save strangers in a foreign land. He was instrumental in the rescue of more than 2,000 refugees, including novelist Heinrich Mann and artist Marc Chagall. Learn about the Varian Fry Institute here.
