Bog Child

Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd
In 1981, the height of Ireland's "Troubles," eighteen-year-old Fergus is distracted from his upcoming A-level exams by his imprisoned brother's hunger strike, the stress of being a courier for Sinn Fein, and dreams of a murdered girl whose body he discovered in a bog.

...This compelling read is lyrically written and contains authentic dialogue and challenging and involving moral issues.

...This haunting, suspenseful novel...ends with a glimmer of hope for a better future. A sense of doom, perfectly captured, and images of sacrifice hang over the well-developed characters, making this a painful and moving read. Pitch-perfect in capturing the often futile struggles for the many victims of Irish independence over the millennia.

I just ordered this book. I loved A SWIFT PURE CRY and THE LONDON EYE MYSTERY and was so sad to hear Siobhan Dowd passed away. It's such a huge loss for the world's readers.

I saw your blog in the comments on THE LONGSTOCKINGS blog. You have some great pics related to reading. Would you mind if I posted a link for your blog on mine? I think my students would enjoy it.

Dear ReadingJunky,
I am thrilled that you found me --please use my blog in anyway that you can! I am a Youth Services Librarian and think of this blog as an ongoing booktalk. I do wonder if anybody is out there manytimes... Yes, please link my blog to yours and I would love to hear from your students! You are in Michigan? I was born in Kalamazoo!!

Wow! Kalamazoo - they have a terrific library there. I'm in Morenci right on the MI/OH border south of Adrian. What a small world! Thanks for permission to link.
